This autumn, Belgian art takes centre stage at Het Kunstuur in Mechelen’s historic Heilige Geestkapel. Over the course of an hour, artworks are paired with music and personal stories told by well-known and lesser-known Flemish voices. The tenth exhibition runs from 21 September 2026 to 13 June 2027.

Also featured in the exhibition is Edgard Tytgat’s Scenes from the Life of an Artist (1946), from The Phoebus Foundation collection. Across twelve scenes, Tytgat looks back on his life as an artist, from a turbulent childhood and leaving home to artistic triumphs and setbacks. Memories, dreams and imagination blur together in a painted account of his life.

Typical of Tytgat is his seemingly simple, almost comic-strip-like way of telling a story. Behind the colourful scenes lies a deeply personal narrative, full of humour, imagination and autobiographical references. At Het Kunstuur, the work is quite literally given a voice: artist Ines van den Kieboom and professor of tax law Michel Maus each offer their own perspective on an episode from Tytgat’s remarkable life.
