While modern art is often regarded as a radical break with the past, many artists in fact drew inspiration from the Middle Ages. In the direct and at times raw visual language of Gothic painting, sculpture, and printmaking, they discovered an expressiveness that resonated more strongly with their pursuit of authenticity and emotional intensity than the conventions of the academic tradition ever could.
