Saint Paul’s church is one of Antwerp’s most remarkable heritage sites, home to a permanent collection where painting and architecture naturally complement one another, with works by Rubens, Van Dyck and Jordaens taking centre stage.

Within this rich historical and artistic setting, two works from The Phoebus Foundation collection are on view until the end of October 2026: Saint Jerome by Abraham Janssens and Virgin and Child with Saint Dominic by Erasmus II Quellinus. Both paintings align closely in subject matter and style with the church’s seventeenth-century character and integrate seamlessly into the existing ensemble.

Painting of Saint Jerome depicted as a penitent, seated in a dark interior with a bare torso and a contemplative expression. He holds a crucifix in one hand, while his traditional attribute, the lion, appears beside him.
Abraham Janssens, Mary with Christ and Saint Dominicc.1656
Baroque painting of the Virgin Mary seated with the Christ Child on a throne-like seat in an enclosed garden, surrounded by saints and worshippers. Mary offers a rose while the Child sits on her lap.
