In Stephan Vanfleteren. Transcripts of a Sea, the renowned Belgian photographer offers a glimpse into his long-standing fascination with the sea. His photographs are placed in dialogue with works spanning five centuries of maritime art. A particular highlight is Seascape, Seen from Mariakerke by Léon Spilliaert, a loan from The Phoebus Foundation collection. In this work, Spilliaert captures the sea not as a soothing panorama, but as an almost infinite, mysterious expanse that holds as much foreboding as it does beauty.

The exhibition runs until 4 January 2026 at MSK Ghent.
