This autumn, the Royal Monastery of Brou brings together an exceptional group of works for the exhibition The Moulins Triptych: a Renaissance masterpiece restored to its former glory. At its heart is Jean Hey’s recently restored Triptych of the Virgin in Glory.

The monumental triptych was painted around 1498 for Moulins Cathedral, commissioned by Anne de France and Pierre II de Bourbon. Following more than three years of research and restoration, it now takes centre stage in an exhibition exploring Jean Hey’s remarkable career, from his artistic training in Flanders to his work at the French court.

Also on display is The Virgin and Child with Saints Thomas, John the Baptist, Jerome and Louis from The Phoebus Foundation collection. Attributed to Hugo van der Goes, the painting offers a fascinating point of comparison with Jean Hey. It has long featured in research into Hey’s artistic training and his relationship with Van der Goes, who appears to have been an important influence on the younger painter. Bringing the two artists together makes this artistic connection tangible and places Hey’s work within the broader cultural exchange between the Low Countries and France at the end of the fifteenth century.
