Van Dyck captured his sitters with striking precision and an effortless elegance. Around 1628–1629, he immortalised the Antwerp couple Marie Nutius and Jacob De Witte. Yet it is her portrait that does not quite conform to convention. Who was Marie Nutius, and why does her portrait subtly depart from the rules?
